BM Calendar

Postby smr » Tue May 18, 2010 4:46 pm

Eoghan and I are sitting the library trying to work out when we should see Scott. To this end a BM calendar of things that are happening on BM would be a cool feature. Privacy would be a genuine problem with this and I'd like one that uses ical or similar so that it would be possible to fiddle with it on my phone.

Still, could be nice.

Well, we've got a secure Arrangements forum, isn't that good enough?

Yeah but it would be good to have something like surprise.php to strips dates from the arrangement forum and arranges them all into one calendar grid so you can see it at a glance. It might be worth making a bbcode tag for confirmed dates and provisional dates to that end. I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to have it displayed at the root of the Arrangements forum.

Speaking of surprise.php, I can't get the block to work.

We can implement a calendar mod specifically on the arrangements forum, then pull that information to a section on the homepage. We don't need the tags for now I think.

Both ? blocks should be working. If either is not, then it likely means that the linked source randomly selected is down.

I agree that sounds pretty awesome. If anyone can be bothered implementing it, I'd support it. It would be particularly useful on the move.

Yeah, that's the big thing that's difficult. I was using the forum to arrange free dates with Eoghan yesterday and we were jumping through every page of a couple of the most recent topics to make sure that the dates lined up. It'd be good to just have a month-week grid that could serve for a glance. The only reason I'm looking at auto filling it from dates in the threads is because I was fiddling with the Surprise block code yesterday and it's ingenious stuff.

I think we only want it to show dates that we actually arrange, so if we do a bidding process, like "is May 21st good for you?" We don't want it to go on the calendar. Whereas "meat on May 21st" should be in the calendar. That's where the date tags come in.

Nice work on the surprise block, the more I looked at the front page the more I just couldn't see how it wouldn't work.

Sorry, am I alone in thinking this is utterly unnecessary? I mean, how many events do we have really? It can't be that difficult to keep track of them, they're all in "Arrangements".

Regardless, I think it'd still be easier to look at a weekly calender and have everything displayed neatly there instead of sifting through multi-page threads to get confirmed dates. If it turns out to be useless, it can always be removed.

Your idea would totally work, but, for the sake of simplicity, I think it's best that we implement an existing solution and then work on it from there. If that fails, then this seems like a viable alternative.
